Delmarva Foundation Announces Election
of Adele Wilzack as Board of Trustees Chairman
Former DHMH Secretary named to highest Board leadership seat

Easton, Maryland, January 4, 2007 – Delmarva Foundation, a national, not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving healthcare quality, recently announced the election of Adele Wilzack, RN, MS, Maryland's former Secretary of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, as Chairman of the Delmarva Foundation Board of Trustees. Ms. Wilzack will be taking over the spot previously held by Mary Fleury, M.D.

“We are honored to have an individual with the experience and professional integrity that Ms. Wilzack possesses to lead our Board of Trustees,” said Christian Jensen, M.D. President and CEO, Delmarva Foundation.  “The strong and proactive leadership Adele brings to this position will help Delmarva Foundation move forward as we advance our goal of improving healthcare in the communities we serve.”

Ms. Wilzack received her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, and her MS degree from the University of Maryland School of Nursing.  She started her career in public health as the Assistant Director of the Bureau of Special Home Services and was later promoted to Assistant Commissioner for Health Services for the Aging in Baltimore City.  Ms. Wilzack was then appointed Assistant Secretary of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) and administered the Maryland Medicaid program. Later she was appointed by then-Governor Schaeffer to the position of Secretary of DHMH, the only woman and nurse to ever serve in this capacity.  Ms. Wilzack is currently the President of the Health Facilities Association of Maryland, Maryland’s leading long-term care trade association, representing over 150 provider members. Ms. Wilzack’s Board and Commission appointments include: the Tai Sophia Institute, the Lipitz Center Advisory Board, and the Maryland Gerontological Association.

Other changes to the Board of Trustees include the election of Dr. Melvin Gerald as Vice-Chairman. He has previously served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Board. Dr. Gerald has also served as Chairman of the Board Finance and Audit Committee and on the Board of the American Academy of Family Practice. He received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington. D.C. and has a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Gerald is a family practitioner in the District of Columbia and North Carolina, and is President and CEO of Gerald Family Care Associates, P.C. Dr. Gerald will be succeeding Dr. Michael A. Moskewicz.

John McGinnis, a two term Board member and a CPA, was elected Secretary/Treasurer. A graduate of Washington College and the University of Maryland Graduate School, Mr. McGinnis has served on various Boards and held positions of distinction in both Dorchester County and at the State level.  In addition to his service on the Delmarva Foundation Board of Trustees, Mr. McGinnis has served as an officer for the Dorchester County YMCA, Dorchester Hospice Association, Maryland Society of Accountants, and the Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce.

Delmarva Foundation also elected two new members to its Board, Hal Cohen, PhD, and Bruce Williams. Dr. Cohen, a past Commissioner of The Maryland Health Care Access and Cost Commission, the federal Prospective Payment Assessment Commission and Executive Director of the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission, is a consultant in health economics who formerly taught at the University of Georgia. Mr. Williams, an engineering graduate of Johns Hopkins and construction industry executive, also possesses a variety of board service experience. He currently is Chairman of the Building Board of Adjustments and Appeals for the city of Salisbury and on the Board of Directors of the BowMar Millwork Corporation.

“These distinguished individuals add to Delmarva Foundation’s already formidable leadership panel additional dimensions of knowledge and experience,” added Jensen. “I have no doubt they will lead us to further achievements and growth in the years ahead.”
