Delmarva Foundation Mammography Campaign
Hailed Among Top 50 Publicity Campaigns in Nation

EASTON, MARYLAND-March 3, 2005- Delmarva Foundation, a national not-for-profit healthcare organization dedicated to improving quality in over 20 states, received the Magellan Award from the League of Communications Professionals (LACP) recognizing them for having one of the top 50 Publicity Campaigns of 2004. Delmarva's Corporate Communications team was recognized with the LACP's Magellan Award for "May…Mother's Day…Mammograms: A Publicity Campaign to Encourage Breast Cancer Screening by Highlighting District of Columbia Mammography Rate Disparities." The campaign was developed in response to a study indicating nearly half of the District's elderly and disabled women between the ages of 50 and 67 who have Medicare coverage have not had a recent mammogram.

Delmarva's campaign to increase mammography rates in the District targeted Wards where rates are especially low. Working with healthcare providers, religious institutions and community organizations, the campaign aimed to improve rates for annual mammograms and educate the public about the importance of routine screening. Efforts included intense media outreach, distribution of mammogram beads to screening centers, brochure creation, posters and mail back cards for providers plus a three-step consumer direct mail campaign.

"We are pleased that our work to increase mammography rates in the District has been honored among such distinguished company," said Robin L. Wolfgang, Delmarva, Director of Corporate Communications. "This campaign is part of our ongoing effort to educate women and their families about the importance of routine mammograms, and make sure they know that Medicare recommends and helps pay for annual screenings."

The LACP is a national organization dedicated to supporting and recognizing excellence in the area of professional communications. In addition to Delmarva, other organizations making up the top 50 include Hershey Foods, Miller Brewing Company, Volvo Cars of North America, and Bally Total Fitness. According to LACP, less than one out of four entries submitted in this year's competition received any type of recognition. Delmarva Foundation's communications plan placed 42 out of 335 applicants.

"The 2004 Magellan Awards drew an unprecedented number of entries representing a broad range of industries and organizational sizes" said Tyson Heyn, APR, LACP Principal. "Over 300 entries were submitted so competition was exceptionally tough. Winners demonstrated a laser focus on communications grounded in creativity and passion, which ultimately helped message recipients understand and appreciate its relevance and importance."
